Individually and collectively, Amy O'Neill's work suggests that we may be unmoored from history, yet never far from its anxieties. In a body of work developed over the past fifteen years, she has addressed issues of memory, loss, and longing by way of her own life as well as through a wider historical and cultural frame, while acknowledging that the act of recalling the past is equally a matter of displacement. Although she grew up in the 1980s, her sense of the scope of the comedy of human errors and terrors, in terms of modern life, reaches back to the 1880s at least.
